Press Release

ESC To Manage Swedish- Dutch Short Sea Shipping Project
3 November 2000

The European Shippers' Council is to manage and run a project to promote short sea shipping on behalf of the Swedish and Dutch governments. The project is part of the 'Northern Quality Shipping'(NSQ) initiative developed by the Swedish and Dutch governments to promote short sea shipping and to enhance maritime safety.

The project was formally announced by Xander Van Holk of the Dutch Ministry of Transport at the ESC annual conference Shipper 2000 held in Rotterdam on 25-26th October 2000.

Commenting on the project ESC Secretary General Chris Welsh said

'We are delighted to have been selected to manage this project to develop service performance indicators (SPI's) for short sea services between Goteborg and Rotterdam. Based on our experience in developing similar SPI's in the air freight industry we are confident that such service performance indicators can make a significant contribution to enhanced service performance and provide shippers and carriers with the necessary tools to expand the opportunities for short sea shipping.

'We have already had initial discussions with shippers, ship owners and the ports concerned who will participate in the project and we expect to start the project at the beginning of 2001.'

The project will be jointly run by the ESC and the UK's Freight Transport Association. Both organisations were responsible for the development of the European Air Shippers' Council key performance indicators.
