European Shippers’ Council appoints new Secretary General
5 April 2002
The European Shippers’ Council has announced the appointment of Ms Nicolette
van der Jagt as its new Secretary General from 1 July 2002. Ms van der Jagt has
been ESC’s policy manager since 1994 and has worked closely with her predecessor
Chris Welsh across the spectrum of shippers policy interests.
The appointment of Ms van der Jagt marks a restructuring of ESC which has been
managed by its British member council, the Freight Transport Association since
1997. Ms van der Jagt is a full time employee of ESC and is resident of Brussels.
She holds a Masters degree in European Studies from the University of Strasbourg
and in French and International Relations from the University of Utrecht.
Following a meeting of ESC’s Chairmen’s Committee Mr Dick van den Broeck Humphreij
said: “We are delighted to be able to make this appointment as it demonstrates
how ESC has grown and developed its role as the voice of European shippers.
I am grateful for the huge efforts and successes that were achieved by Chris
Welsh in his time as the ESC Secretary General. Nicolette has worked closely with
Chris throughout that time and is supremely qualified to take ESC forward. She
will be working closely with all the national member associations at ESC to pursue
our policies with the European institutions.
ESC has also announced the appointment of Mr Max Philips as its Inland Transport
Manager. Max is currently responsible for rail freight policy issues at the Dutch
shippers’ association, EVO and is the Secretary of the newly formed the European
Rail Freight Customer Platform (ERFCP). He will be seconded to ESC from 1 May
2002.
Dr Andrew Traill, Head of EU Affairs at the Freight Transport Association will
continue as acting Secretary General until the end of June and ESC will continue
to be based at FTA’s Brussels office in Rue Wiertz adjacent to the European Parliament.
