ESC Organises Fourth Shipper Conference in Marseille
16 July 1999
The fourth annual European Shippers' Council Shipper Conference on transport and logistics is to take place in Marseille on October 20 and 21, 1999. Key note speakers include Mr Jean-Claude Gayssot, the French Minister of Transport, Robert Coleman, Director General of DGVII and Gunnar Bjerde, President of Volvo Transport.
Intermodalism is the central theme for this year's ESC annual Shipper Conference. As such, the conference debate will cover the entire transport and logistics supply chain, ranging from road transport, shipping and rail to important intermediary functions within the transport chain such as ports and freight forwarding activities. There is a heavy Mediterranean flavour in this year's debates, with a special Mediterranean Workshop to focus on the issues and problems in the locality of our venue- Marseille- and the wider Mediterranean region.
The European Commission, and others, are pinning their hopes on intermodalism and enhanced logistics as the means of unlocking the potential for more efficient transport systems encompassing various different modes of transport. Supply chain logistics will, therefore, be a major theme of this year's conference. With a new Transport Commissioner and a freshly elected European Parliament the ESC Shipper Conference comes at an opportune time to debate the future direction of the transport policy debate.
To inform and stimulate the debate the ESC has put together key industrialists, transport practitioners, politicians and Commission officials responsible for the development of this policy. Shipper contributors include: Jean Paul Meunier of Elf Atochem, Brian Moulton of Michelin, Olle Widigsson of Stora Enso, Ermanno Tornavacca of FIAT and Johan Lindberg of Distrilux.. Providers range from Armand Toubol of SNCF, Ed Smulders of NS Cargo and Emmanuel Grimaldi of Grimaldi, Jos Dekkers of FEPORT and Jean Marcel Pietri of ESPO will discuss the role of ports within the intermodal supply chain.
The Shipper Conference is expected to attract over 250 leading transport industry decision makers responsible for the procurement and movement of freight throughout and to and from Europe. They include: shippers, freight forwarders, shipping lines, railways, intermodal operators, airlines, road hauliers, logistics companies. A key feature of the conference is the business partnering opportunities it provides for delegates and for this year special facilities have been made available for delegates to undertake the important business to business opportunities that the ESC Conference uniquely provides.
The ESC Annual Conference was established in 1996. Since this first inaugural conference, the conference has become one of the leading annual industry events. This years' Conference is supported by the Port of Marseilles.
