ESC Statement on the TACA Decision
16 September 1998
The TACA decision adopted today in Strasbourg vindicates the formal complaints against the TAA/TACA by the European Shippers' Council over the past 6 years.
Shippers recognize the enormous efforts made by European Commissioners and their officials in DG IV and DG VII to propose and encourage adaptation of the shipping industry to the modern business environment.
This is a landmark decision since it closes the door to an era of unlawful shipping cartels. Equally, it is a major stepping stone to a future where service providers will see the benefits of working together with their customers in the transport sector. Chris Welsh, Secretary General of the European Shippers' Council said:
"This is the beginning of the end, and we very much hope the shipping industry sees it the same way. Both Commissioners Karel Van Miert and Neil Kinnock have shown a flexibility in responding to European business while at the same time encouraging the shipowners to respond to shippers calls for future cooperation in the maritime sector."
